"Free" Software -
SKYPE examples
A. Idle running

For the advanced private user, this number of
connections should be monitored, but it is relevant
for the software to maintain these connections to facilitate fast service to the
end points that are
related to your connections list, such as USA, Australia, etc. This information
is stored when you
specify the retention of telephone numbers you have dialed to remain in your
"Contacts" list.
For a corporation, it is a potential risk that
uncontrolled software connects to servers without
documented purposes. The above figure, to some extent, underlines
the issue of uncontrolled
traffic/connections.
B. Statistics after a session.

The above example shows the network load following a 29 minute
trans-continental conversation.
Perceived quality of service was good; equal to budget land line, if not better.
For a private user,
no problem with this network load - and the PC should not be running background
tasks - this
affects voice quality.
In a corporate network however, this is part of the evidence exactly why
SKYPE usage should be
discouraged - multiple simultaneous conversations would put unpredictable extra
load on the network.
